Getting thereOn West Island; road from the settlement, around five minutes
EntryFree; works for sale

A steel barge left on the West Island shore has been turned into a gallery and working studio, with the hull as the building and the interior hung with work made on the islands, much of it from material the ocean brings in: plastic, rope, floats and drift timber collected off the windward beaches. It is one of the few things to visit on West Island that is not a beach.

What you actually see

  • The barge - a beached steel hull used as the gallery building.
  • The drift material work - pieces made from what the ocean deposits.
  • The studio - the working space inside the hull.
  • The island art - work made on Cocos rather than imported.

When to go

April to October is the drier season. Opening depends on the artist being there rather than fixed hours. Check locally before going.

Honest expectations

Opening hours are informal and it may be shut when you arrive. It is small and half an hour covers it. This is a working studio rather than a formal gallery.

Nearby

The settlement is nearby, and Trannies Beach is north.
