Yamdrok Lake

Yamdrok is one of the great sacred lakes of Tibet, a body of water of around six hundred square kilometres at 4,440 metres whose shape branches into long arms between brown hills, holding a colour between turquoise and deep blue that comes from mineral suspension and depth. The standard approach from Lhasa climbs to the Kamba pass at about 4,790 metres, where the whole lake opens below at once, which is why nearly every visit begins with a stop at the prayer flags on the pass. The road then runs along the shore past villages, with the Nojin Kangsang glacier visible beyond.

When to go

May to October for clear roads and open water; the lake freezes in winter and passes can close in snow. Morning light gives the strongest colour. Foreign visitors need a permit and guide.

What to expect

The pass is above 4,700 metres and altitude hits hard on a day trip from Lhasa. Photo stops with decorated yaks and dogs are charged. Wind on the pass is constant and cold.
