Bosten Lake

Bosten Hu covers around a thousand square kilometres east of Korla, fed by the Kaidu river and draining into the Konqi, which makes it a rare large freshwater body in an otherwise arid basin. Its western and northern edges hold extensive reed marsh, among the largest reed beds in China, harvested commercially and important for waterbirds including swans, herons and large numbers of migrants. The southeastern shore is sand, where dunes run to the water and beaches have been developed for swimming and boating. Fishing is significant, and lake fish appear on menus around Korla.

Background

Bosten Lake sits at the northeastern edge of the Tarim Basin, with Yanqi 20 km to its west and Korla 57 km to the southwest, and with adjacent small lakes it covers about 1,000 km2, the largest lake in Xinjiang. It is 55 kilometres long and 25 wide, averages 8.15 metres deep and reaches 17 metres, and it lies at 1048 metres. The Kaidu River brings about 83% of its water, and the outflow leaves to the southwest as the Kongque, the Peacock River. Until the early 1970s two native fish species made up 80 percent of the catch; carp were introduced from 1962 to 1965, and since 1978 the introduced European perch has dominated.

When to go

May to October for warm weather and boating; the lake freezes in winter. Bird numbers peak on migration in spring and autumn. Summer weekends bring crowds from Korla to the beaches.

Before you go

Developed beach areas charge entry and are busy in summer. Water levels and salinity have fluctuated with irrigation upstream. Reed harvesting is industrial in places.
