Baiyangdian Lake

Baiyangdian is a shallow lake system of more than a hundred connected water bodies covering some three hundred square kilometres, threaded by channels through dense reed beds that grow taller than a boat, with villages built on islands and reached only by water. Lotus covers large areas and flowers through July and August, which is when most visitors come. Since 2017 the area has sat inside the Xiongan New Area, a state-directed new city project, and the lake has been the subject of a large restoration and water-diversion programme.

When to go

June to September, with lotus at its peak in July and August; winter freezes the lake and boats stop. Weekends and holidays are busy. Water levels and clarity have improved with restoration work but vary.

Practical notes

The lake has suffered severe pollution and shrinkage over past decades, and restoration is ongoing. Boat trips are ticketed and routed, with limited freedom. The Xiongan development has brought construction and access changes across the area.
