Mao is the main town of the Kanem, the region north of Lake Chad that gave its name to the Kanem-Bornu empire, one of the longest-lasting states in African history, and a sultan still sits there in a line traced back through that history. The town is built in banco among dunes, with a palace, a mosque and a market, and the country around it is sand with wells and scattered gardens between the ridges.

When to go
November to February is the cool season. March to May is extremely hot. The rains from July are brief and light this far north.

There is nothing set up for visitors and facilities are minimal. Photography of the palace and officials needs permission. The road from N'Djamena is long and rough.
