On a February night in 1794 a convoy struck the reef off East End and ten ships were lost, and the people of the East End district put out in small boats and brought the crews ashore. The park on the bluff above the reef was opened for the bicentenary in 1994 and marks the event with a monument and interpretive panels looking straight out at the water where it happened.

What you actually see

  • The monument - the memorial to the ships and the rescue.
  • The reef view - the water the convoy struck laid out below.
  • The interpretation - the panels telling the sequence of the night.
  • The 1994 opening - the park made for the bicentenary of the wreck.

When to go

December to April is the dry high season. The site is open year round. Mornings have the best light on the reef.

Honest expectations

It is a small park and half an hour covers it. There is no shade to speak of and the wind off the reef is constant. The East End is a long drive from the tourist strip.

Nearby

East End Lighthouse Park is nearby, and the Blowholes are west.
