Meagre Bay Pond

Meagre Bay Pond is a shallow brackish lagoon behind the south shore road at Bodden Town, protected since 1976 as one of the earliest reserves in the islands, and it is the best birdwatching on Grand Cayman for anyone who does not want to leave the tarmac. Through the northern winter it fills with waders and waterfowl: black-necked stilts, blue-winged teal, herons, egrets, sandpipers and occasional flamingos, with West Indian whistling ducks resident. A layby on the road gives the view across the water. It is a stop of half an hour with binoculars and nothing at all without them.

When to go

October to April is the northern migration and the peak. Early morning and late afternoon are best for light and activity. Water levels vary and the pond partly dries in a hard dry season, which concentrates the birds.

Things to know

It is a roadside stop and takes half an hour; without binoculars there is nothing to see. There is no hide, no path and no facility. The road is fast and the layby small. Development around the pond has been contentious and water quality is affected by runoff.
