Away from the Seven Mile Beach strip, the eastern districts of Grand Cayman keep a weekend habit: roadside stands and small kitchens open on Friday and Saturday and cook whatever came in, fried snapper and grouper, conch fritters, jerk chicken, with rice and beans, plantain and heavy cake to finish. There is no organised festival and no schedule published anywhere; the stands appear where they always appear. It is where Caymanians eat, it costs a fraction of what the strip charges, and the fish is closer to the boat. Asking locally is the only way to find out who is cooking that week.

When to go

Friday and Saturday evenings are when the stands operate. There is no published schedule; ask where you are staying or at a shop in the district. Conch has a closed season from May to October.

What to expect

Nothing is advertised and stands move, so finding one takes asking. Payment is cash. Seating is a plastic chair if you are lucky. Conch should not be on offer between May and October. The eastern districts are a drive from the hotel strip with no realistic public transport in the evening.
