At Juncalinho on São Nicolau's northern coast the lava runs out flat to the sea and the waves have worn basins into it, filled and refreshed by the surge, deep enough to swim in when the water is calm. The rock around them is jagged black volcanic stone and the surf breaks on the outer edge. Steps and a handrail have been put in at the main pool, and the village sits a short way inland.

When to go
November to June is the dry season and calmest. Swimming is only sensible in flat conditions. Winter swell closes the pools entirely.
Honest expectations
In any swell the pools are genuinely dangerous and people have been swept off the rock. The lava is sharp and cuts badly. There are no lifeguards or facilities.
