Vulcan

The Canadian Pacific Railway surveyor named the townsite Vulcan in 1910 after the Roman god of fire, decades before Star Trek gave the name to Spock's home planet. From the 1990s the town decided to make use of the coincidence: a starship replica stands at the entrance, the tourist information centre is built as a landed saucer called the Tourism and Trek Station, street signs carry Vulcan script, and a bronze bust of Leonard Nimoy was unveiled in 2016 after he visited in 2010. A convention, Vul-Con, runs in summer. Around two thousand people live here and the surrounding country is grain and cattle.

History

A surveyor for the Canadian Pacific Railway named the place after Vulcan, the Roman god of fire; it was incorporated as a village on 23 December 1912 and as a town on 15 June 1921, and a photograph of the tornado that struck it in July 1927 became the illustration of the tornado article in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Its first newspaper, The Vulcan Review, appeared in 1912, followed by the Vulcan Advocate in 1913, and the last of the town's grain elevators was taken down on 27 April 2025 (Wikipedia, Vulcan, Alberta).

When to go

May to September; the station reduces hours in winter. Vul-Con falls in summer and is the town's busiest weekend. It is a stop on a longer prairie drive rather than a destination.

Practical notes

It is a small prairie town with a themed overlay and takes about an hour. The connection is coincidence, not history. Services are limited outside the main street.
