Foumban and the Grassfields

Foumban, in the rolling western Grassfields highlands, is one of the most culturally rich destinations in Cameroon, the historic capital of the Bamoun Sultanate, one of the great traditional kingdoms of the region, whose dynasty stretches back some six centuries. At its heart stands the grand Royal Palace, seat of the Sultan, with its renowned museum displaying the kingdom's treasures, royal thrones, beaded artefacts, weapons and masks. The town is also famed as a centre of Cameroonian art and craft, especially its skilled bronze and brass casting, wood carving and weaving, sold along its lively artisans' street, offering a deep encounter with Grassfields culture.

When to go

November to February, the drier season, for the most comfortable travel to the western highlands, whose elevation gives a pleasant climate; the palace, museum and craft workshops can be visited year-round. Great traditional festivals, when held, bring the Sultanate's culture to spectacular life, though timing and current conditions should be checked.

Facilities are basic. For a genuinely rich encounter with one of the region's great traditional kingdoms, its royal palace, treasures and celebrated craft, though, Foumban is a rewarding cultural highlight of diverse Cameroon.
