Royal Court of Tiébélé

The royal court at Tiébélé is a walled compound of Kassena houses built from earth, straw and cow dung, with entrances low enough that anyone coming in must bend, and the walls painted by the women of the household in geometric black, white and red patterns that are renewed each year after the rains. The forms are functional as well as decorative, and UNESCO inscribed the court in 2024.

Background

The court lies in Tiébélé, a town of the Centre-Sud Region. Along with the home and court of the Kassena king, known as the Pè, and of other royal family members, the ensemble includes mausoleums, memorials and shrines, as well as sacred groves and stone courts. It has stood for over 500 years, since Patyringomie, a chief of the Mossi people, whose roots lie around Loumbila in central Burkina Faso, founded it in the 16th century. The court was placed on the country's Tentative World Heritage List on January 24, 2012, a year in which it also joined the World Monuments Watch, and it was inscribed on July 26, 2024, at the 46th World Heritage Committee in New Delhi, India.

When to go

November to February is the cool dry season. Painting is done after the rains, so the walls are freshest from around November. March to May is extremely hot.

Good to know

This is a lived-in royal compound, not a monument: photography and access need permission and a guide. Rain damages the painted surfaces every year. Reaching Burkina Faso requires arrangements made through an operator well in advance.
