At Laongo, a plain of exposed granite became a canvas: since 1989, sculpture symposiums have invited artists from Burkina, Africa and the wider world to carve directly into the outcrops, and the accumulated result is an open-air museum of hundreds of works - faces surfacing from boulders, abstract experiments, social commentary and pure play - scattered across the rockscape so that visiting is a treasure walk, each rise revealing the next gallery. Local guides know the carvers' stories; late light deepens every relief; and the site keeps growing as new symposiums add layers to the plain's slow conversation.

What you actually see

  • The carved outcrops - hundreds of works surfacing from the granite.
  • The treasure-walk layout - galleries revealed rise by rise.
  • The international layers - carvers' hands from many countries.
  • The late-light reliefs - the plain at its sculptural best.

When to go

November to February for cool walking; the final two hours of daylight flatter the reliefs beyond photography's needs. Combine with Ziniare on the same road.

Honest expectations

Shade is scarce and the walking uneven - hats and water even in the cool season; guides are modestly priced and genuinely additive. The site's upkeep is community-level: entry fees and courtesy are the contribution. Current-guidance-first planning applies as standard.

Nearby

Ouagadougou, Ziniare and the plateau villages.
