Lake Tengrela

West of Banfora, Tengrela spreads its shallow sheet through water-lily fields - and its hippos have made it the region's gentlest wildlife outing: village boatmen pole visitors out in wooden pirogues at dawn or dusk, circling at practised distance while the resident pod surfaces, yawns and submarines among the lilies. The lake is a working commons - fishermen set nets from the same pirogues, kingfishers and jacanas patrol the margins - and the arrangement, fees to the boatmen's cooperative included, keeps coexistence profitable for everyone including the hippos.

When to go

November to February for cool mornings; dawn and dusk are the pod's active hours and the light's best. The boatmen know the day's positions - their judgement is the itinerary.

Honest expectations

Hippos are dangerous animals granted distance, not tame ones granted selfies - the boatmen's line is the law of the lake. Life jackets are rare; weigh your comfort. Fees are modest and correctly earned. Regional planning follows current guidance as standard.
