Kazungula

Kazungula is where the Zambezi and Chobe rivers meet and where the boundaries of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia converge within a very short distance, the closest thing to a quadripoint anywhere in the world. For decades the crossing to Zambia was by pontoon ferry with queues of trucks waiting days; a curved road and rail bridge opened in 2021 and replaced it. The geography is the attraction: standing at a point where you can see several countries at once.

What you actually see

• The river junction - the Chobe meeting the Zambezi below the crossing.
• The four borders - the convergence point of four countries within a short distance.
• The freight traffic - the trucking corridor the bridge was built to unblock.

When to go

May to October is the dry season and the most comfortable. Border formalities are quicker outside peak freight hours. The rivers are highest between March and June.

Honest expectations

There is little to do here beyond look at the crossing; it is a border post, not an attraction. Photography near border installations is restricted. Crossing requires the correct documentation and vehicle paperwork.
