Vjetrenica Cave

Vjetrenica takes its name from the wind that blows out of its entrance, produced by the temperature difference between the cave and the outside air, strong enough to feel from some distance. Inside is a long system of passages, lakes and formations, but its real distinction is biological: more troglobitic species have been recorded here than in any other cave known, around a hundred of them, of which a substantial number were first described from this site. Among them is the olm, the blind aquatic salamander of the Dinaric karst, which lives for decades and can go years without food. Tours cover a stretch of the main passage past flowstone, lakes and formations, with the biology explained along the way.

When to go

April to October for the easiest access; tours run to a schedule and outside the main season are less frequent, so booking ahead is sensible. The cave holds a steady cool temperature year-round, so a layer is needed whatever the weather outside.

Honest expectations

Entry is only on guided tours at set times and cannot be done independently. The cave interior is around 11 degrees regardless of season and visitors regularly arrive in summer clothes. Seeing an olm is not guaranteed and depends entirely on chance. The road in is quiet and public transport is impractical.
