Istvan Cave sits in the limestone above Lillafured, a resort settlement in a wooded valley on the north side of the Bukk. Unlike the nearby Anna Cave, which formed inside porous limestone deposited by springs, this is a classic dissolution cave with stalactites, columns and sheets of flowstone built up over a very long time. Tours follow a lit path with steps and railings through a series of chambers, and guides point out the formations that have picked up names over the years. The air stays cool and damp all year, and the constant temperature is part of why the cave is used for guided visits rather than left to weather. It is one of the few Bukk caves developed for general visitors.

What you actually see

  • Dripstone chambers - stalactites, stalagmites and columns along the lit tour route.
  • Flowstone sheets - curtains and terraces of calcite laid down by film water on the walls.
  • Anna Cave nearby - a contrasting cave formed inside spring-deposited limestone, shown separately.
  • The Lillafured valley - the wooded setting outside, with the Garadna stream and a tall waterfall.

When to go

The cave holds a steady cool temperature all year, so it works as a wet-weather or heatwave option. Tours run on a fixed timetable and only with a guide, so aim to arrive shortly before a departure. Winter hours are shorter. Summer afternoons and school holidays bring the largest groups, which makes the narrow passages slow.

Honest expectations

You cannot walk it alone: tours run to a schedule, mostly in Hungarian, and waiting for the next one can eat an hour. There are many steps and the path is wet and slippery in places. It is cold enough that a jacket matters even in August. Photography is restricted, lighting is dim, and the tour is shorter than the ticket suggests.

Nearby

Lillafured, the Garadna valley and the Bukk plateau trails are all within walking distance.
