Ostrozac Castle

Ostrozac began as a medieval fortress above the Una, held by the Babic family and then Ottoman garrisons, and it acquired its present appearance in the early twentieth century when the Habsburg-era owner, Lothar von Berks, built a neo-Gothic residence within and against the old walls, so the site combines a genuine medieval and Ottoman fortress with a romantic revival castle grafted onto it. Since 1970 a sculpture colony has been held here, and stone works from successive years stand through the courtyards and grounds, which is the other reason to come. The position above the Una valley gives long views. Parts of the complex remain unrestored.

When to go

May to September for the grounds and the views; opening is seasonal with reduced winter hours. The sculpture colony works in summer. Mornings are quiet.

Honest expectations

Parts of the complex are unrestored and closed. Opening hours are seasonal and can be irregular. Interpretation is limited. The visit takes about an hour.
