Mogorjelo

Mogorjelo is a Roman agricultural estate on the Neretva plain south of Capljina, built in the first century and rebuilt in the fourth as a fortified complex: a rectangle of about a hundred metres a side with walls and corner towers enclosing a residence, baths, storerooms and the working buildings of the estate, including oil and wine presses whose stone bases remain. It supplied the nearby colony of Narona. Early Christian basilicas were built into the site later. The walls stand to a few metres in places and the plan is legible on the ground, set among cypress and vines with the Neretva nearby. The site is unfenced and free.

• The fortified walls - the enclosure and its corner towers.
• The presses - the stone bases of the oil and wine production.
• The residential rooms - the villa quarters and bath foundations.
• The basilica remains - the later Christian buildings on the site.

When to go

April to October for the walking; the Neretva valley is very hot in July and August with no shade on the site. Mornings and late afternoon are best. It is open at any time.

Honest expectations

Everything is at low wall or foundation level and takes reading. Interpretation on site is limited. There is almost no shade. Facilities are nonexistent.

Hutovo Blato lies south; Pocitelj is north up the Neretva.
