Andricgrad

Andricgrad, also called Kamengrad, was built between 2011 and 2014 on a spit at the confluence of the Drina and the Rzav in Visegrad, a project of the film director Emir Kusturica named for Ivo Andric, whose novel The Bridge on the Drina is set at the Ottoman bridge a few hundred metres away. It is a purpose-built town of stone in a mixture of Byzantine, Renaissance and Ottoman manners, with a square, streets, a church, a cinema, a library, shops, restaurants and apartments, occupied and working rather than a film set. It was made partly as a location and partly as a cultural project, and it draws visitors alongside the World Heritage bridge next to it.

What to look for

• The built streets - the stone town with its mixed architectural styles.
• The main square - the centre with its mosaic and church.
• The Drina confluence - the rivers meeting beside the town.
• The cinema and venues - the working cultural buildings.

When to go

May to October for the walking and the river; the town works year round with venues open through the winter. Events and film screenings run in season. Weekends bring visitors.

Things to know

Nothing here is historic; the town was built in the 2010s and is presented as new work. It is small and takes a couple of hours. Some units remain unoccupied. It is entirely a constructed project and divides opinion.
