Hopkins

Hopkins is a Garifuna village strung along a long beach in southern Belize, founded in 1942 after a hurricane destroyed the settlement at Newtown, and it wears its culture openly: drumming carries down the sand in the evenings, hudut - fish in coconut broth with mashed plantain - simmers in family kitchens that welcome guests, and the Lebeha drumming centre teaches visitors the segunda and primero rhythms that UNESCO recognises as intangible heritage. On November 19th, Garifuna Settlement Day, the village re-enacts the ancestral arrival by dugout canoe at dawn and celebrates all day. It doubles as a relaxed base for the reef and the jaguar reserve inland.

When to go

The dry season from late November to May is the pleasant window, and Settlement Day on 19 November is the cultural peak - book lodging well ahead for that week. Summer is hot, humid and mosquito-rich but quiet. Sargassum has affected the beach in spring and summer in recent years, and in the low season some businesses close.

Honest expectations

Hopkins is a real village, not a resort strip - the sand road is dusty in the dry season and muddy in the wet, sandflies on the beach are notorious at dusk (repellent is essential), the brown sand has seagrass close in and is not the Caribbean postcard, and development has picked up at both ends of the village. Cultural sessions are genuine and locally run; pay fairly and ask before photographing ceremonies. The village's charm is its everyday life, taken at its own pace.
