Zaosie

Adam Mickiewicz, the poet whose Pan Tadeusz opens with a line addressed to Lithuania and who is claimed by Polish, Lithuanian and Belarusian traditions alike, was born in 1798 at the small estate of Zaosie, which his family held. The buildings were gone by the twentieth century, and what stands is a reconstruction completed in 1998 for the bicentenary: a wooden manor house with a thatched roof, a barn, a granary, a well sweep and a small orchard, furnished as a modest gentry household of the period, with displays on the poet's early life and the landscape he wrote from. Novogrudok, where he grew up and was schooled, is a short drive north.

When to go

May to September for the grounds; the museum keeps daytime hours and closes on Mondays. Anniversary events fall around the poet's December birthday. Weekdays are quiet.

Honest expectations

Everything on the site is a 1998 reconstruction; nothing original survives. The museum is small and takes about an hour. Labelling is in Belarusian and Russian. The site is rural with no facilities.
