Cole's Cave

Cole's Cave runs under the interior of Barbados near Welchman Hall, a wet limestone system with a stream running through it that is entered on foot and by wading, with helmets and lamps rather than walkways and lighting. It is the counterpoint to Harrison's Cave nearby, which is done by tram: here you get muddy. Formations, bats and the underground stream are what there is.

What you actually see

• The bats - the colonies roosting in the roof.

When to go

December to May is the dry season and the stream is lower. Heavy rain raises the water and trips are cancelled. Trips run on arrangement rather than a schedule.

Honest expectations

This is proper caving with mud, wading and low passage; it is not a walkway tour. Trips must be booked with an operator and are cancelled after rain. Not suitable for anyone uncomfortable in confined spaces.
