Barbados has produced a run of cricketers out of all proportion to its size: the three Ws, Frank Worrell, Everton Weekes and Clyde Walcott, all born within a few kilometres and a few years of each other; Garfield Sobers, widely held to be the finest all-rounder the game has seen; Wes Hall, Charlie Griffith, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall, Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes. Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, rebuilt for the 2007 World Cup, hosted the 2024 T20 World Cup final. Below the international game sits a dense club and village structure where matches are played every weekend of the season on grounds anyone can walk up to.

What you actually see

  • Kensington Oval - the international ground, rebuilt in 2006.
  • Village cricket - club matches on grounds across the island at weekends.
  • The three Ws monument - at the university, where all three are buried.
  • The Sobers legacy - the island's greatest player, still a presence.

When to go

The domestic season runs roughly January to July with matches most weekends. International fixtures are scheduled well ahead and sell out. Club grounds are free to walk up to and are the more interesting experience.

Honest expectations

International tickets are expensive and infrequent; the club game is free, constant and better for understanding the place. West Indies cricket has been in a long decline and the crowds at internationals are a fraction of what they were, which Barbadians will tell you about at length. Grounds outside the Oval have minimal facilities.

Nearby

Kensington Oval is in Bridgetown; club grounds are in every parish.
