Tetulia

Tetulia is the northernmost point of Bangladesh, a finger of land between Indian territory with the Mahananda river along its edge, and it has one specific draw: on clear mornings in autumn, mainly October and November, the massif of Kangchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world, stands on the northern horizon across a hundred and fifty kilometres of India, pink at dawn, visible from the riverbank and the old dak bungalow garden. The view depends entirely on haze and lasts a few hours after sunrise. The area around is flat tea country, the newest tea region in Bangladesh, with gardens spreading since the 2000s, and stone collection from the Mahananda is the other local trade.

When to go

October and November, at dawn, on clear days; the rest of the year haze hides the mountain almost entirely. A day or overnight, since dawn is the hour. Check the forecast before the long journey.

Before you go

The mountain is visible only a few weeks a year and many visitors see nothing. The journey is very long from Dhaka. Facilities are basic. The border runs close and photography toward posts is unwise.
