The royal camel farm at Janabiyah holds several hundred camels belonging to the ruling family in a set of pens beside the road, and it is open to anyone who turns up, free of charge, with handlers on site who let visitors close to the animals. Calves are usually in the pens along with the adults. It is an unusual thing to be able to walk into without arrangement or payment. The herd is kept for the ruling family rather than for racing or milk, which is why the animals are unusually well conditioned.

What you actually see

  • The herd - several hundred camels in pens beside the road.
  • The calves - young animals kept with the adults through the year.
  • The handlers - staff who bring visitors close to the animals.
  • The open access - a royal farm anyone can walk into free.

When to go

November to March is the comfortable season. Mornings are cooler and the animals more active. Opening hours are set and it closes in the afternoon.

Honest expectations

It is a working farm and the smell and flies are considerable. Conditions in the pens are basic. An hour covers it completely.

Nearby

Al Jasra is southwest, and Manama is east.
