Ocean Hole

Ocean Hole sits in the middle of Rock Sound settlement, a roughly circular inland blue hole about a hundred metres across with steps down to the water. Despite being well inland it connects to the sea through the limestone, and the water rises and falls with the tide; ocean fish live in it, including snapper and grouper, and generations of villagers feeding them have made them tame enough to come to the steps. Its depth has never been firmly established.

When to go

November to April is the dry season. The fish are most active when someone is feeding them, which happens through the day. Mornings are quietest.

Things to know

It is a village amenity, not a tourist site: there is a bench and a set of steps and that is all. Twenty minutes covers it. Feeding the fish bread is traditional here but is not good for them.
