Hamilton's Cave

Hamilton's Cave runs under the ridge in central Long Island and is generally described as the largest cave system in the Bahamas, with chambers wide enough to hold a house and passages continuing well beyond the guided route. Lucayan artefacts were found here, including pottery and evidence of use as shelter, and the cave has been in one family's care for generations, with tours run by them. Bats roost in the upper chambers and the guides know where.

What you'll find

When to go

November to April is the dry season and the most comfortable. Tours are arranged with the family rather than run to a timetable, so calling ahead matters. Torches are provided.

Things to know

Tours depend on the family being available and are not scheduled; turning up unannounced can mean waiting or missing out. Footing is uneven and there is no lighting beyond torches. Bat guano and the smell come with the territory.
