Glass Window Bridge

Eleuthera is a hundred-mile sliver of island, and at Glass Window it narrows to almost nothing: a strip of rock a few metres wide with the open Atlantic crashing on the east side and the calm shallow Bight of Eleuthera lying still on the west. The colour difference is what people come for - deep navy against pale turquoise, meeting at a single point - and a small bridge carries the road across the gap where a natural rock arch once stood before storms took it. Waves regularly break clean over the bridge in heavy weather, which is spectacular from a distance and genuinely dangerous up close.

• The rock cliffs - carved limestone either side of the gap.
• Queen's Bath - natural rock pools warmed by the sun just north.
• The Atlantic swell - waves breaking over the narrow neck on rough days.

When to go

The calmer winter and spring months are best for stopping safely. Rough Atlantic days deliver the most dramatic wave action but also the most risk - view those from well back rather than on the bridge. Midday sun gives the strongest colour contrast for photographs.

Honest expectations

The bridge carries live traffic on a narrow road with no footpath - people have been hit while photographing, and rogue waves have swept visitors from the rocks. Park properly, stay off the roadway, and never stand on the seaward rocks in swell. Queen's Bath nearby is beautiful but the same warning applies doubled: people have died there in rough conditions. Treat both as viewpoints first.
