Gala Ethnographic Reserve

The Gala reserve is built around an archaeological site on the Absheron peninsula where occupation runs back several thousand years, and it combines the excavated remains with material brought in from elsewhere: petroglyphs, burial mounds, tombstones, a reconstructed dwelling, threshing floors, a blacksmith and a pottery. Craftspeople work on site on some days. The result is a mixture of genuine excavation and assembled display, which is worth understanding before you walk round it.

What you actually see

• The excavated settlement - foundations, wells and storage pits on the original site.
• The relocated monuments - petroglyphs, tombstones and burial structures brought from around the peninsula.
• The reconstructions - dwellings, a bakery and threshing floors built to show how they worked.
• The craft workshops - blacksmith, potter and carpet loom, staffed on some days.

When to go

April to June and September to November are comfortable. Craft demonstrations run to a schedule that varies, so calling ahead is worth it if that is the draw. Summer on Absheron is hot with little shade.

Honest expectations

Some of what is displayed was moved here rather than found here, and the signage does not always make that clear. The reconstructions are approximate. It is a good hour or two rather than a half day.

Mardakan and Ramana castles are elsewhere on the peninsula, and the Ateshgah temple is south at Surakhany.
