Ningaloo, along the remote northwest coast of Western Australia, is one of the world's great fringing reefs and a World Heritage Site, and what sets it apart from the Great Barrier Reef is that it runs right up to the shore, so you can wade or step off the beach and snorkel over coral and among fish within moments, no boat required. The reef and the deep water just beyond it draw an astonishing procession of large marine life: most famously the whale shark, the largest fish in the world, which gathers here in numbers each year and which visitors can swim alongside on licensed tours, a gentle giant filtering plankton beside you. In season the reef also sees manta rays, humpback whales and nesting turtles, and the water is warm and clear. Backed by the arid Cape Range and its gorges, and far from any city, Ningaloo pairs world-class marine life with genuine wilderness and few crowds.

When to go
Whale sharks are present roughly March to August, the prime reason many come; humpback whales pass later in the year, and turtles nest in the summer. The reef and its snorkelling are good year-round, with the cooler months most comfortable in this hot region. Book whale-shark tours ahead in season.
Honest expectations
It is remote, a long drive or a flight to the northwest coast, with limited services in the small towns of Exmouth and Coral Bay, so it takes effort and planning to reach. The star experiences, above all swimming with whale sharks, are seasonal and run on licensed tours that book out and are not cheap. It is hot and exposed. But the reward, reef life straight off the beach and the ocean's giants, is exceptional and uncrowded.
