Mirima National Park

Mirima sits immediately on the edge of Kununurra, a small park of weathered sandstone eroded into domes and ridges banded in orange and grey, formed from sediments laid down some 350 million years ago and carved by water since. The resemblance to the Bungle Bungle domes two hundred kilometres south is real enough that the park is widely called the mini Bungles, and the difference is access: this can be walked from town in twenty minutes and needs no tour or aircraft. Short trails climb to lookouts over Kununurra and the Ord valley, and the country is significant to the Miriwoong people, with interpretive signage in Miriwoong and English.

When to go

May to September for the dry season; summer temperatures pass forty degrees and walking is unwise in the middle of the day. Early morning and late afternoon are best for both temperature and colour. The park is small and quiet.

Good to know

The park is genuinely small, with walks measured in hundreds of metres, and the domes are on a much smaller scale than the Bungle Bungles. Vehicle entry is charged. There is no shade on the trails and no water.
