K'gari (Fraser Island)

K'gari, long known as Fraser Island, off the southern Queensland coast, is the largest sand island in the world and a World Heritage Site, a place that overturns expectations of what sand can support. Improbably, tall rainforest grows straight out of the dunes, nourished by fungi in the sand, and the island holds dozens of freshwater lakes, some perched high in the dunes with water of startling clarity, ringed by white sand, of which Lake McKenzie is the most beautiful. There are no sealed roads: you explore by four-wheel-drive along sandy inland tracks and, at low tide, along the vast Seventy-Five Mile Beach, which doubles as a highway and an airstrip, past a rusting shipwreck and coloured sand cliffs. The island is home to dingoes considered among the purest in Australia, and its waters see migrating whales in season. It is a wild, sandy, forested world with its own rules.

History

The Butchulla people have lived on the island for somewhere between 5,000 and 50,000 years. James Cook was the first recorded Briton to sight it, and Matthew Flinders sailed past in 1799 and again in 1802; in 1836 Captain James Fraser and his wife Eliza were shipwrecked here, and settlers who arrived in 1847 named it Fraser Island after him. Logging began in 1863 and went on until 1991, and sand mining until 1977. On 9 July 1935 the liner Maheno was beached on the east coast, where its wreck still lies. The island was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1992, and on 7 June 2023 the Queensland government officially renamed it K'gari (Wikipedia, K'gari).

When to go

The island is a year-round destination; August to October adds migrating humpback whales in the bay. Summer is hot and humid with the chance of storms. Driving depends on the tides, as the beach highway is only usable around low tide, so plan around the tide tables whenever you go.

What to expect

Getting around means four-wheel-drive on soft sand and tidal beaches, which is genuinely challenging and where inexperienced drivers get bogged or into trouble, so either take a tour or be confident and prepared. The dingoes are wild predators that have attacked people, so strict rules on food and distance must be followed, especially with children. The ocean beach has dangerous currents and sharks and is not for swimming; stick to the lakes. Permits are required.

Hervey Bay, a whale-watching centre, and Rainbow Beach are the mainland gateways; the Great Barrier Reef lies further north.
