EntryFree

Aruba's celebrated Natural Bridge on the north coast fell down in 2005, which left the island's tourism with a problem and a set of postcards showing something that no longer exists. Less well known is that there are other arches, and the one at Seroe Colorado at the southeastern tip is the largest still standing: a span of limestone cut by the sea at the base of low cliffs, with the surf running under it. It is reached by a rough track past the Colorado Point lighthouse through what was the refinery company's residential area, and there is nothing there at all beyond the arch and the wind.

What you actually see

  • The arch - the largest natural bridge still standing on Aruba.
  • The surf below - running under the span on the windward side.
  • The lighthouse - the Colorado Point light on the way out.
  • The old company housing - the refinery village the track passes through.

When to go

Year-round. Mornings are cooler and the light is better on the eastward-facing coast. The track is rough and a four-wheel drive helps. Combine it with Baby Beach and San Nicolas.

Honest expectations

The cliff edge is undercut and unfenced, and the rock is sharp; people have been hurt getting too close for photographs. The track out is rough and poorly signed. There are no facilities, no shade and no water. It takes half an hour once you find it.

Nearby

Baby Beach and Rodgers Beach are nearby; San Nicolas is ten minutes north.
