Teyú Cuaré

Teyú Cuaré protects a headland where red sandstone cliffs rise above a bend in the Paraná, giving the widest river views in this part of Misiones, with Paraguay on the far bank and forested islands in between. Trails climb through Atlantic forest to viewpoints on the rock, past outcrops that local Guaraní tradition associates with a lizard spirit, which is what the park's name means. Within the park stand the ruins of a stone house built by a German who settled here in the 1930s, a figure whose story fed the novel Wakolda and the film made from it, and whose isolated hillside home is now a curiosity on the walking route. The park is small, quiet and can be walked in a morning.

When to go

April to October for cooler, drier walking; summer is humid and the trails become slippery. Late afternoon gives the best light over the river. Access is by unpaved road that suffers after rain.

Honest expectations

The park is small, with short trails and basic facilities, and the ruins are just walls. The access road is rough and can be impassable for low cars after rain. Insects are persistent in the forest sections.
