Loreto and Santa Ana Ruins

Loreto and Santa Ana were founded in the early seventeenth century and shared the fate of the other Jesuit-Guaraní missions, but unlike San Ignacio Miní they were never fully cleared, and the forest has kept much of them. At Loreto, once a major centre with the first printing press in the region, walls and foundations lie under enormous trees whose roots grip the stonework, with paths threading through deep shade. Santa Ana is more open, with a great terraced plaza, the outline of its church and cemetery walls, and steps that give a sense of the scale mission architecture reached. Both are quiet, often empty, and covered by the same UNESCO listing as their neighbour; visiting them shows what the jungle did with the rest.

When to go

April to October, when heat, humidity and insects ease; summer visits are sweaty and mosquito-heavy. Morning light suits Loreto's shaded ruins. Both sites are usually quiet even when San Ignacio is busy.

Things to know

Far less is standing here than at San Ignacio, and without a guide the sites read as low walls in the woods. Paths can be muddy and uneven. Facilities are minimal, and opening hours are shorter than the main mission's.
