Balcarce

Balcarce sits among low sierras in the potato-farming country inland from Mar del Plata, and it is on the map because Juan Manuel Fangio was born here in 1911, worked as a mechanic in the town, and went on to win five Formula One world championships in the 1950s, a record that stood for almost half a century. The Museo Fangio occupies a restored 1870s municipal building over several floors and holds an unusual collection: cars he raced and cars given to him by manufacturers, from Mercedes and Maserati to Alfa Romeo, along with trophies, films and personal effects. Outside town the Sierra La Barrosa and the old hillside racing circuit offer views, and the surrounding sierras have caves and viewpoints.

When to go

Year-round; the museum is indoors and works in any weather. It closes on some Mondays and holidays. Motor-racing anniversaries and rally events bring visitors and occasional street displays.

Practical notes

Beyond the museum the town has little to detain visitors, and non-enthusiasts may find a couple of hours enough. Interpretation is largely in Spanish. The surrounding sierra attractions are scattered and need a car.
