Stingray City Antigua

Off Seatons on the north-east coast, a sandbar inside the barrier reef hosts Antigua's version of the Caribbean's ray ritual: southern stingrays, habituated over decades, sweep in silk-soft circles around visitors standing waist-deep, gliding over feet and accepting squid from guides' hands while the reef keeps the water pool-calm. Snorkelling off the bar edge adds turtles and the coral garden. It is wildlife interaction with training wheels - managed, gentle and genuinely delightful for children and the fish-shy - run as short boat trips from the village dock.

When to go

December to May for the calmest lagoon and clearest water; trips run year round, mornings glassiest. The rays attend reliably - feeding has seen to that. Book ahead in high season; boats are small.

What to expect

This is habituated, fed wildlife - an ethical judgement each visitor makes; operators here follow shuffle-your-feet and no-lifting rules that keep it on the defensible side, and you should too. Rays are gentle but wild: no grabbing, and mind the guides' handling instructions. Cruise-day slots crowd the bar; independent mornings are calmer.
