Sandy Ground and the Salt Pond

Sandy Ground threads its village along a sand strip with water on both sides: Road Bay's anchorage and beach on one, the great salt pond on the other - the island's industrial memory, where pond salt was raked, piled and lightered to ships for Trinidad's oil refineries until the 1980s closed the chapter. The pumphouse relics and interpretation keep the story; the pond itself now works as birdlife habitat, flamingo visits included, flushing pink-to-rust with its seasons. The bay side carries the living traditions - the racing boats mustering off the beach, fish landings, and the strip's famously sociable evenings.
