Oran

Oran is Algeria's extrovert: a port city that answered to Spain for three centuries - the Santa Cruz fort still rides its mountain above the bay, chapel beside it, with the panorama that organises every visit - then grew French boulevards, an opera house and waterfront arcades whose faded grandeur now hosts the country's most famous cafe culture. This is the birthplace of rai, the rebel pop that conquered the world's radios, and the city's evenings still run on music and seafront strolling. The Sidi El Houari old quarter, the covered markets and calentica street food fill the days between.

History

Phoenician necropolises along this coast date from the 6th to the 1st century BC, and the small Roman settlement of Unica Colonia vanished as the Vandals, the Mauro-Roman Kingdom and then the Arabs took the Maghreb; the present city was founded in 903 by the Azdadja and Ajissa Berbers of the Maghrawa confederation, and its name probably comes from a Berber phrase meaning place of lions. It prospered under the Almohad caliph Abd al-Mu'min, who built thirty ships to link it with Andalusia, and under the Zayyanids of Tlemcen, until Castilians under Cardinal Cisneros took it in 1509; Algerian forces won it in the siege of 1707-1708, Spain retook it in 1732, and after a strong earthquake in October 1790 the bey of Oran recovered it in 1790-1792. The beylik lasted until the French took the city in 1831, and under French rule it was the capital of the Département of Oran (Wikipedia, Oran).

When to go

April to June and September to October for seafront weather; summer is beach-social and hot, winter mild and quiet. The drive or cable route up to Santa Cruz wants a clear day.

Oran's charm is atmosphere over monuments - grand buildings wear their neglect openly, and sightseeing lists run short while days fill easily anyway. Standard port-city awareness after dark. The Santa Cruz road is the one unmissable; everything else is texture, best with a local friend or guide.
