Rruga Kole Idromeno is the pedestrian spine of central Shkoder, named for a nineteenth-century local painter and architect, and it was restored in the 2010s to bring back the facades of the merchant houses and shops along it: two-storey buildings in pastel render with arched openings, wooden shutters and iron balconies, in a style that reflects the city's long Venetian and Austro-Hungarian connections and looks more Italian than Balkan. It runs between squares with cafes spilling across the paving, and it is where Shkoder walks in the evening. The Marubi photography museum, several churches and the Ebu Bekr mosque are on or near it. Shkoder has a reputation as a cultural city and the street is where that is most visible.

What you actually see

  • Restored nineteenth-century facades - pastel render, shutters and balconies.
  • A Venetian and Austro-Hungarian look - the architecture of the trading period.
  • Evening cafe culture - the street filling with tables after work.
  • The Marubi museum on the street - the photography collection at its side.

When to go

April to October for the outdoor cafes; the street works year round. Two hours. Evenings are when it fills. Shkoder is hot in summer and the street has limited shade at midday.

Honest expectations

The restoration is thorough and some find it too uniform, with new render over everything. Prices in the cafes on the street are higher than elsewhere in the city. It is short and two hours is generous without stopping.

Nearby

The Marubi museum is on the street; Rozafa castle lies south-west.
