The Aland Midsummer Poles

Aland's villages mark midsummer with a tradition the islands have made their signature: the midsummer pole - a tall mast dressed with greenery, flower crowns, sun-wheels, miniature ships and figures, raised by communal muscle on the eve with fiddles and song, then left standing the whole year as the village's decorated exclamation mark.
