Kumlinge

Kumlinge sits on the northern archipelago route between the main island and the Finnish mainland, and its church of St Anne, built around 1500, holds the most complete set of medieval wall paintings in Åland: Franciscan work covering the vaults and walls with saints, biblical scenes and ornament, whitewashed over after the Reformation and uncovered again in the twentieth century. The island lies on the old postal route between Sweden and Finland, which is why it carried more traffic historically than its size suggests.

Background

Both a municipality and an island group, Kumlinge shares its name with its main island, and the name is believed to mean "rocky passage". Vikings came first, and people settled permanently from the 13th century. Tax records of the 16th century mention roughly a dozen households, most of them farming or fishing, and the population shrank during the 20th century. At 31 December 2023 the municipality counted 320 residents across 865 km², with 747 km² of water and only 118 km² of land. Most people speak Swedish as their first language. An airfield on the main island handles charter and emergency flights.

When to go

June to August is the season; the church is open and ferries run fully. Winter reduces services to a minimum. The church can be locked outside season.

What to expect

The church is often locked outside the summer season. Ferry connections are infrequent and govern the visit entirely. There is very little else on the island for a visitor.
