Kabwelume lies a few kilometres downstream of Lumangwe on the same river, dropping in a crescent with a secondary veil of water coming in from a side stream, into a gorge lined with forest. It is harder to reach than Lumangwe, with a walk of an hour or so through the bush or a rough track that needs four-wheel drive, and it sees correspondingly fewer people. Many who make the effort find it the better of the two.
What you actually see
- The crescent - the curved front of the main drop into the gorge.
- The side veil - a secondary fall coming in from a tributary stream.
- The gorge forest - the vegetation lining the walls below the falls.
- The walk in - the hour or so through bush from Lumangwe.
When to go
April to July has the strongest flow. The path is overgrown and slippery in the wet season. Volume falls away by October.
Honest expectations
The path is unmarked and a guide from Lumangwe is worth taking. The rough track needs four-wheel drive and is impassable when wet. There are no facilities at the falls.
