- Accept coffee or sweet tea when offered - refusing needs a gentle excuse
- Dress conservatively - long sleeves and trousers for men too, and a headscarf for women in towns
- Use your right hand for eating and greeting
- Ask before photographing people - always, and especially women

- Show public affection between men and women
- Eat, drink or smoke openly in daytime during Ramadan
- Point the soles of your feet at people when sitting on floor cushions
- Expect much to happen on Friday - it is the day of prayer and rest

- Cash only - bring what you need, as ATMs and cards are not part of the picture
- Socotra runs on weekly flights and organised camping tours - book through an operator months ahead
- Alcohol is not sold - the social drink is tea
- Afternoons slow right down as men gather to chew khat and talk
