Yen Tu Mountain
The mountain a king abdicated to, founding the Buddhist school that became Vietnam's own.

Tran Nhan Tong ruled Dai Viet, twice defeated Mongol invasions, and then abdicated in 1293 and came to this mountain as a monk, founding the Truc Lam school - a Vietnamese Zen tradition rather than an imported one, and the reason Yen Tu became the country's principal Buddhist mountain. Pagodas, stupas and hermitages are strung up the slope over about six kilometres, with the bronze-clad Dong pagoda at the summit at around 1,068 metres. The complex was inscribed by UNESCO in 2025 together with Vinh Nghiem and Con Son-Kiep Bac. The spring festival from the first lunar month brings very large crowds.

When to go
February to April for the festival, which is also when it is most crowded. A full day.
Practical notes
Festival crowds are enormous and queues for the cable car run for hours. The stone steps are steep, wet and slippery in mist, which is frequent. The summit is often in cloud. Modern development at the base is extensive.
