Saigon Botanical Garden

The botanical garden in District 1 dates from the 1860s and is one of the oldest in Asia, laid out along avenues of tropical trees that have grown tall enough to give the site most of its character. It combines a plant collection, with orchid and cactus houses, palms, bamboo groves and labelled specimen trees, with a zoo that occupies much of the same grounds. Paths are wide and shaded, and on weekday mornings it is mostly locals exercising or sitting out the heat. The garden sits beside the History Museum and a temple at its northern gate, which makes it easy to combine with a walk through the older part of the centre.

What you actually see

• The old avenues - rows of tall tropical trees planted in the nineteenth century.
• Orchid houses - the shaded collections of orchids, ferns and bromeliads.
• Labelled specimen trees - botanical plantings identified along the main paths.
• The shaded lawns - open areas used by families and morning exercise groups.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and by far the most comfortable time to walk the grounds; the rains from May to October bring heavy afternoon downpours. Early morning is coolest and quietest, before school groups arrive. Weekends and holidays are busy with families, and the animal enclosures in particular fill up. Allow extra time if you plan to see them.

Honest expectations

The zoo takes up a large part of the site and many enclosures are small, bare and dated, which visitors who care about animal welfare find upsetting; the plant collection is the reason to come. Maintenance is uneven, with faded labels and worn paths. A single ticket covers both, so there is no way to pay for the garden alone. It is hot and humid by mid morning.
