Sa Dec Flower Village

The flower growers at Tan Quy Dong on the edge of Sa Dec have been working for around a century, and the delta's water table forced a solution that is now the district's signature: the plants are grown in pots on bamboo racks raised above standing water, so the beds do not flood and the growers move between them in flat boats to tend and water. Hundreds of hectares are under flowers - marigolds, chrysanthemums, roses, ornamentals - and the whole district works towards Tet, when the crop goes to markets across southern Vietnam. In December and January it is at its most saturated.

• Everything timed to Tet - the crop going south for the new year.

Honest expectations

Outside the Tet run-up the fields are much less full. These are working nurseries and walking among them without asking is not welcome. Some gardens charge and have added photo props. Heat is constant.
