Phuong Hoang - phoenix cave - sits high on a hillside in Vo Nhai district, reached by a climb of several hundred steps, and it opens into three levels of chamber with light coming down through holes in the roof, which lights the formations without electric fitting for part of the day. The hill's shape from below is read as two birds, which gives the cave its name. At the foot, the Mo Ga stream emerges from the rock and runs into a pool used for swimming in summer, so the standard visit is the climb up and the swim afterwards. It is a long-standing domestic destination and quiet on weekdays.

What you actually see

  • Three levels of chamber - lit through holes in the roof.
  • A hill read as two birds - which names the cave.
  • A stream out of the rock below - with a pool for swimming.
  • Several hundred steps up - the work of the visit.

When to go

April to October, for the stream as well as the cave. Half a day.

Honest expectations

The climb is steep and hot. The cave floor is uneven and slippery. The stream pool is crowded at summer weekends. Facilities are basic and litter is a problem in season.

Nearby

Vo Nhai is close; Thai Nguyen city is south-west.
