Yale moved to New Haven in 1716 and most of what visitors see is much later: a building campaign through the 1920s and 30s produced the Collegiate Gothic quadrangles, and the architect James Gamble Rogers had the stonework deliberately distressed, glass panes irregularly leaded and stone faces weathered, so a new campus would read as old. The Beinecke Rare Book Library of 1963 is the other set piece - a windowless box whose walls are panels of Vermont marble thin enough to pass light, so the interior glows amber and the books sit in a glass tower in the middle. The Yale University Art Gallery and the Center for British Art are both free and both serious.

Good to know

Residential colleges are closed to the public. Museums close on Mondays and reduce hours in summer. The Beinecke's reading areas are for researchers. New Haven around the campus varies block to block.
